View Media🚒 Empowering the Future: City of Joburg EMS Leads the Way 🌟 In celebration of Youth Month, the City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS) hosted an inspiring event aimed at educating and equipping young learners with life-saving knowledge and critical skills. Through interactive demonstrations and mentorship, learners gained firsthand insight into emergency response, fire safety, and the vital role EMS plays in our communities.
Our school engaged in a vibrant heritage celebration, showcasing different cultures to honour Heritage Month. Students were encouraged to wear traditional outfits representing their cultural heritage. Classrooms were decorated with visual aids highlighting South Africa's rich cultural diversity, including Zulu, Venda, Sesotho, and Xitsonga cultures.
Our school successfully participated in the Aqua Enduro Competition hosted by the Department of Water and Sanitation. Protea Glen Secondary School was represented by Mr. Lekalakala, who coordinated the Gauteng team. The team secured an impressive 2nd place nationally. Learner Mashudu Ndou was an integral part of the team, prepared by Mrs. Ndwandwe, contributing significantly to their collective success.
Our Debate Team participated in a school debate at Sekano Ntoane on 14 September 2024, successfully making it to the semi-finals.
Activities such as "Impromptu Speaking" and "Extemporaneous Speaking" were held, giving students short preparation times to deliver speeches on various topics. Tournaments featured different debate formats (e.g., policy debate and Lincoln-Douglas debate), offering students valuable competitive experience to hone their public speaking and argumentation skills.
A learner participated in and achieved 3rd position in the financial literacy competition. The competition included two rounds: school and district level. Students delivered a five-minute prepared speech on prescribed financial literacy topics, covering areas such as budgeting, savings, investments, consumer rights, and responsibilities.
Prizes: Top learners received fully funded bursaries worth approximately R150,000 to study at any public university in South Africa.
Protea Glen excelled in the Clean Air Competition, where learners Esethu and Gundo took 1st place, demonstrating their innovative solutions to environmental challenges.
In the Bokamoso Creative Essay Competition, more than 30 learners from Protea Glen participated. The coordinating team, led by Mr. Lekalakala, Mrs. Nyazeka, Mrs. Ntuli, and Mrs. Lethoba, saw learner Esethu Khumalo rise to the top, securing 3rd place in a highly competitive field. Esethu was awarded R70,000 for the school and R5,000 for herself, cementing the school's reputation for fostering talent and creativity. These victories highlight Protea Glen Secondary School No. 1's commitment to excellence in science and creative achievement.
Students were encouraged to bring donations for a local charity as part of the holiday spirit. The school organized a Secret Santa gift exchange with a small budget to ensure all students could participate. Parents, guardians, and community members were invited to join the festivities. Students showcased their talents with a holiday twist, including singing carols, dancing, and performing skits. All thanks to the Winny Radebe foundation who sponsored the school.
The farewell ceremony for the 2024 matriculants was a memorable event filled with heartfelt speeches, awards, and performances. The event celebrated the achievements and growth of the graduating class, with teachers and staff sharing inspiring words of encouragement for their future endeavors. Students reflected on their journey, expressing gratitude for the support received throughout their high school years. The ceremony concluded with a dance and social time, allowing students to create lasting memories with their peers before embarking on their next chapter.
The Soweto-Protea High Schools Spelling Competition for Grades 8-10 took place on 24 June 2023 at Protea Point Mall, NDABA ST, Protea North, Soweto.
The Protea Glen Secondary No. 1 team achieved outstanding results: NtObeko placed 3rd, Karabo placed 2nd, and Samantha took 1st position.
Celebrating the excellence, dedication, and outstanding performance of our learners and staff in 2025.
Founded in 2009 and officially opened on 1 October 2009, our school began its journey with just 200 Grade 8 learners. These pioneering learners advanced through the grades to become our first matric class in 2013, achieving an impressive 82.2% pass rate.
Since then, our school has grown into a beacon of excellence, where academic achievement and holistic development go hand in hand. We take great pride not only in our strong academic record but also in our sporting achievements — notably, our Netball team’s bronze medal in the 2014 Mr Price competition, after a spirited performance against Mondeor High School.
Today, our dedicated team includes 46 educators and 10 public service staff.
